Call us soppy romantics, but we like this story. A young man and a beautiful young woman from a tea plantation were in love, but the local tyrant seized her as his concubine. She escaped, only to learn that the tyrant had killed her lover. Finding his body deep in the mountains she wept and wept until she became the rain, while her lover's body turned into a tea bush. Which is why, according to the legend, the area where Mao Feng tea grows is forever cloudy and humid the whole year round. All together now…ahhh! This tea is special, unlike any other green tea on the market. A green tea liked by people who don’t like green tea.

Louise Says

how does it taste?

This tea has a delicate natural taste of fresh summer air, peaches and apricots. The infusion will turn clear pale green (not the murky brown you often see with standard green teas).

good if you're feeling

In need of a make-over. Can’t afford rehab, liposuction or Botox? Why not settle for a nice cuppa? You may have heard about the many reputed benefits of drinking green tea, ranging from weight loss to anti-ageing - more fun than cosmetic surgery!

How we like it

Best drunk as it is. No need to add anything.

Just cover one tea temple with 80 degree C water and infuse for 3 minutes. Remove temple and top-up glass with iced water. Garnish with cucumber slices.

Brew Time

  • tea temple - 1 per person. brew for 3 minutes, best with water at 80 degrees C. (If you don't have a fancy kettle or thermometer to hand, grabbing the kettle just before it boils will do the trick!)

Whole leaves take longer to brew, but the little wait is definitely worth it.

favorite green tea

* * * * * by Halle • 25th April 2019

“teapigs' mao Feng green tea is the perfect balance between the earthy green tea flavor and a light sweet blend. it smells and tastes amazing! I am wondering how much caffeine it contains though...”

Reply from teapigs, 26th April 2019

"Hi Halle! Our Mao Feng has about 25-35 mg of caffeine per serving. Thanks for the kind words!"

Great taste, bad smell

* * * * - by Jon • 13th January 2016

“Finally found a Teapigs Green Tea in store, as I thought the others looked like good products but am a green tea kina guy. Like other reviewers, I dislike the smell of this tea, which is quite potent. However, the taste is pretty good and I like the fact that the teabag has actual leaves inside, not powder like most.
The smell of it makes me debate if I want to buy more”

Nicely Mild Green Tea

* * * * - by Pipsy Agnes • 1st April 2015

“This is one of my favorite green teas ever. It brews up pleasantly mild and nutty, not overly grassy or astringent. Usually I only like green tea that's scented with jasmine, but this is a lovely change of pace. Will definitely order again!”

I feel like I am at a Chinese / Asian Resturant and I love it

* * * * * by Stacy Handlin • 14th March 2015

“I just felt like I had snuck a pot of tea out of the local Chinese / Vietnamese / Mandarin restaurant. I really enjoyed this tea. I would have liked it a little bit stronger, but I was still very happy and would order it again. I just wish I didn't have to wait.”

* * * * * by Anne • 2nd August 2014

“I can't believe I actually drink green tea nowadays! I used to drink it occasionally, holding my nose to avoid the taste, just because I knew it was good for me. Eventually I just couldn't stomach it anymore and the offending package would sit in my cupboard, going stale until I threw it out. This stuff is very different; I think I'm slightly addicted now, which for a longstanding non drinker of tea and coffee is a revelation to me. It's light, not sickly sweet nor does it have a bitter aftertaste. And it's not muddy brown! I could do with a nice discount for buying in bulk though :)”

How much caffeine?

* * * * - by Lisa • 12th December 2013

“This tea has really grown on me, but I would like to know how much caffeine it has in it. It would be helpful if your website stated how much.”

Can't stand the smell

* * * - - by Jenni Jackson • 5th December 2013

“First off I just cannot stand the smell of this, its strange, something very unpleasant.
Taste wise there isn't much to it for me, maybe I'm too used to the stronger green teas.
Won't be repurchasing, glad I only had a sample pack.”

Unusual Smell Tastes Nice

“Smells like boiled cabbage and doesn't taste much better. I don't usually mind green tea, not a lover or a hater, but this stuff is the worst green tea I have ever tasted!

Not for me at all but maybe if you're reading this you may like the taste of boiled cabbage tea.....I do not.”

So smooth

* * * * * by Joanne Cooper • 31st August 2013

“Hate tea but love this. There is no after taste, its so smooth. I ran out of it yesterday and bought an alternative green tea and had to throw them away as the flavour was leaving a nasty bitter coating on my tongue. Can't do without my Mao Fen Green Tea and have stocked my cupboards so I don't run out.”

Nice green tea.

“I'm a big green tea drinker and this is a pleasant everyday green tea. The taste and smell of this one I find quite unusual and I prefer it on the second steeping.”

“Can't stand green tea usually, didn't get the fuss, took a few cups to get into it but drink it regularly now.”

* * * * * by Emelia Smith • 8th May 2013

“This tea has converted me from the english breakfast tea milk and sugar tea drinker I was. I got served it in a cafe and recognised the teapig brand. The best green tea, I will soon be ordering a 50 pack because I crave this tea. It's just so lovely to sit and drink and a has such a smooth flavour. Best green tea. I genuinely feel better after drinking this tea.”

* * * * * by Stuey • 23rd March 2013

“You've tried the rest - this is the ONE! Best tea bags ever, had these in Giraffe and Haven't looked back since absolutely amazing! unlike other green tea bags these don't leave your mouth dry or without that weird headache after.
Worth every penny at 23p a cup BARGAIN!”

* * * * * by Claire Vardon • 19th March 2013

“THE best green tea, bar none! You will never use the "other" brands again once you have tried this. It blows them all out of the water. I was never keen on plain green tea and always went for a flavoured variety, until I tried this. This doesn't need flavour of any kind, it has the purest, freshest taste and is totally different to the regular green teas that have "dust" in the tea bag. If you don't like green tea normally I promise you'll think again once you give this one a whirl.”

Mao Feng

“I really enjoy green tea and decided to try this after reading the reviews. seriously disapointed, there is no way i can drink this stuff, I've tried brewing it for different times to see if I can improve the taste but no way. and yes it does taste like drinking kentucky fried chicken!”

You've converted me!

* * * * * by Roberta • 16th January 2013

“I got a sample free with a magazine and was a bit hesitant to try it as usually green tea makes me wretch but this is just so gorgeous. It is a soft, calm flavour if that makes sense and it has definitely converted me to a green tea drinker.
Will be ordering the 50 pack ASAP.”

The Best Tea of Any Kind I Have Ever Had

* * * * * by Jessica • 6th December 2012

“Absolutely gorgeous. In addition to tasting amazing while drinking it, it gives a long lasting clean taste in my mouth. I have found it leaves me wanting to eat less after having it simply because my mouth tastes lovely as it is. The taste itself is very clean with hints of peach. I tend to like this mid-morning as it gives me a fantastic caffeine kick that is useful in addition to pleasant in that I find easier to be creative and focused. Definitely to be drunk as it is, no sugar, no lemon. I usually brew it for 5-7 minutes.”

Green tea as good as it gets

Mao Feng Green Tea

* * * * * by Mrs Dhun Burton • 22nd August 2012

“I really enjoyed Mao Feng Green Tea as given to me on my birthday as a gift. It has a clean and clear taste without being bitter (only bitter if you over brew it) but certainly no fruity overtones as you describe.
Best drunk in the morning after breakfast.”

Pure and beautiful

* * * * * by Annette • 9th August 2012

“The most pure and beautifully clean green tea that you will ever taste. Beware once you've tried it you will never go back. :)”

“I know everyone's said this already but this is seriously for people who don't like green tea - it is way better than any of the other brands available. Not bitter!!!”

Go Green

* * * * - by Darren Holloway • 3rd June 2012

“Very different from any green tea I've tasted before. A nice floral flavour and aroma. I quite like bitter flavours in some of the better greens I've tried, Clipper Organic for example, but this is a very different experience. Can't decide yet whether I prefer it with lemon or as it comes. I think it'll be a grower.”

great tea

“I like tea, but usually i find it hard to drink green tea, as its a more bitter one. but this one is just perfect. nice, clear tea, with a fresh scent and flavour. so happy with my choice:)”

“I am not a huge fan of green tea, however, i found this not bitter unlike normal green tea. It was pleasent but i didnt taste anything fruity, it was all tea. i would recommend to people who want to try green tea without the yukky dry bitterness.”

Best Green Tea Ever

* * * * * by Caroline • 9th March 2012

“I am a green tea fanatic and have tried green tea all over the world and this is one of the best green teas that I have ever tasted, and it comes in a handy tea bag which generally a green tea of this high quality would usually only be sold tastes fresh and light and I always have a cup every morning it is simply delicious!”

Best green tea ever

Oh my word!

* * * * * by Rosie • 13th February 2012

Best green tea ever!”

A tea that is not for MeV:-(

* * * - - by Sam Eggleton • 24th January 2012

“I received this as a taster packet. It brews really nicely. I must admit I use the bags a couple of times because the quality of the tea can sustain this. There is a peach and apricot flavour however it doesn't agree with my taste buds Sorry was a little sickly for me,peach has never been a favourite of mine but I thought I would give it a go.i don't want to put anyone off it's flavour is gentle,fresh and has no harshness it's just not my cup of tea! I think the stronger less flowery tastes must agree with me more.”

Mao Feng Green Tea

* * * * * by Irene O'Sullivan • 18th January 2012

“We love Mao Feng Green tea. Tried it at a hotel we stayed in and just loved it and now that we're home we have ordered it. My husband drinks a lot of green tea but this is now his favourite. I have not liked green tea before but now I love it. Well done for providing such a great tea!”

Lovely peach taste

* * * * * by Rebecca • 8th January 2012

“I have only ever tried green tea once and did'nt really enjoy it all but this tea is really light and refreshing. You can really taste the peaches, I haven't added anything to it and don't think I will bother, tastes great with just hot water. Will be ordering again.”

Got me hooked :) (with honey)

* * * * - by Tia • 29th December 2011

“Let's not talk about the teas that came before...I'm so happy I found this one! I like adding half a teaspoon of honey to the tea, which makes it a little bit sweeter. You can still appreciate and taste the green tea, but i just prefer a little more sweetness. I crave it!! I've never craved tea! Thank you, teapigs X”

Simple, classic

* * * * * by Mark Leach • 10th October 2011

“I'm a big green tea drinker - probably average around 6-8 cups a day. I have many different varieties and have tried thousands. Teapigs Mao Feng is quickly becoming my default, baseline tea. It's the first one I reach for. The one that keeps me going through the day, particularly first thing in the morning and in the afternoon lull. Well done Teapigs and long live Mao Feng.”

Mao Feng Green Tea

* * * * * by • 12th June 2011

“Generally I dislike tea, all that dust and after taste. I first sampled Mao Feng Green tea in Brighton and loved it at once. Hint of fruit in the aroma and a lovely taste. I love it and now buy it on line.”

Mao Feng feedback

* * * * * by • 15th April 2011

“I recently purchased Mao Feng Green tea, and it was superb.

Unlike other green tea products on the market (that I've tried), which have a shriveled and tasteless quality, the leaves here were full on, and the flavour really came out! This makes a real compliment to matcha when on a budget.”

* * * * * by • 19th March 2011

“I wasn't sure I'd like this, but as it was part of my teapiglets pack, I was resolved to try it. I love green tea, and this is no exception. Mao Feng is light and refreshing, and not as sweet as Jasmin, great for those moments where you just want to take a second for yourself. The list of teas I want to buy in bigger balk is getting, well, bigger.”

* * * * * by • 31st January 2011

“we were on a trip to edinburgh and called in at a resteraunt called pepperpots in morpeth for dinner where as well as the fantastic food we got to try your green tea for the first was fantastic and refreshing to have a decent cuppa for a change after trawling through endless brands and being dissapointed by murky bitter tasting rubbish. needless to say we bought a pack to take with us and have enjoyed it since”

Green Teapigs

* * * * * by • 1st December 2010

“Fantastic! Not bitter at all. I had tried so many other brands and either have to remove the bag after about 30 seconds, or find they have a bitter aftertaste. The Teapigs are just perfect.”

“This in my opinion is the best green tea.I have it at work in the morning to help me manage with my early starts.”

* * * * * by • 1st September 2010

“This tea is lovley. Very light, sweet and refreshing it tastes nothing like any green tea i have ever tasted before. It has a beautiful light green colour, not like the pale brown of other cheaper green teas.

This beauty is also packed with loads of health benifits and I will deffinatly purchase more as a treat to perk me up when I am feeling down.

I would recomend this tea to anyone, especially people who do not like green tea as your perception of it will change forever!”

* * * * * by • 24th August 2010

“A really lovely green tea. Very short amount of time needed to infuse. A single tea temple can make four yummy cups of tea, which is fortunate as it's very more-ish!”

“This is the best green tea I have tasted so light and refreshing”

Your friends will be green with envy when they try it!

* * * * * by • 10th July 2010

mao feng green tea

* * * * * by • 14th June 2010

“Confession: I eat a helluva lot of Chinese food. Consequently, i've consumed a fair bit of green tea in my time. And this is among the nicest - I love the light, clean taste, and clear green colour. Agree it's much more drinkable than standard supermarket green tea; we have one at work with a tinny taste and an appearance roughly akin to pond water. Right, that's it from me - I'm off to put the kettle on again and phone for a takeaway...”

Super Duper Tea

* * * * * by • 6th May 2010

“This has to be the best green tea I have ever had. Both myself and my partner agree that its one of the best purchases we have ever made. The tea is so clean and tastes wonderful. Some green teas I find make you mouth feel a little dry, but the teapigs one is refreshing all the way. Am very very happy with this tea and have also convinced my mum to try some. A friend of mine recommend this site to me and I would just like to add that the name teapigs is brilliant!”

a bit too sweet for me...

* * * * - by • 15th March 2010

“I was quite recently introduced to Teapigs. The stores here in Sweden just started to carry their teas. I had been drinking green tea of other brands for years, so I was amazed when I tasted Teapigs green tea. f**king awsome. But, well, "Super fruit tea" was a bit too sweet for me. Yet, I have enough experiance with tea to tell that it's of real top-notch quality. I think I'll give it to my mom. She'll love it.”

* * * * * by • 23rd October 2009

“ive never been a green tea fanatic, but thought id give the mao feng a try. every green tea id previously tried seems to have a bitterness to it, not it says on the tin, peaches and apricot, and so refreshing, i may be developing a habit. a beautiful tea.”

Nice tea to Take to work

* * * * * by • 12th September 2009

“Finding Teapigs was a bit of a revalation for me, it really opened my eyes to the world of tea. At home I have gone a bit OTT with my selection of Pu Erhs and oolong but I don't really want to take them to work since they are quite costly even compared to T-pigs. My salvation is in tea like this. I can easy swallow the asking price, in fact, I see it as quite a bargain!

This tea is indeed surprisingly fresh with apricots with the first infusion with a nice oolong like aftertaste. It's an interesting and pleasent tea that will give you an experience of what better green teas can be that won't cost you the earth.

It's been nice to revisit T-pigs and also rediscover a good tea that I can brew at work for my ever developing taste in tea.”

I'm Hooked !!!!

* * * * * by • 4th September 2009

“Another fantastic green tea from Tea Pigs ! Was given this as a sample by my local stockist and it is yet another tea which I have become hooked on. There just arnt enough hours in the day to fit all of my favourites in. This green tea has become one of my daily staple beverages...... Tea Pigs... what have you done......I now worry about running out of my favourites!!!!”

If only I wasn't that greedy for teapigs myself, I would give a friend the sample ;-) Am panicking that I'm running out of teapigs peppermint, and can't wait for my free sample of this other tea to arrive! A true fanatic?!”

One of the lightest best green tea's in the UK

“Bought the trial pack to sample. Afraid i won't be buying again. Could tell you what the smell reminded me of, but i won't!! All i can say is personal tastes account for alot, and other people love it! Just not one for me unfortunately. Love some of the other teas though so all is not lost!!!”

Lovely, light green tea

* * * * * by • 20th February 2008

“I'ved tried lots of different green teas but this one is probably my favourite - although I'm still looking... This tea is very delicate and refreshing with none of the odd aftertaste that you get from some green teas.”

Teapigs is the best!

* * * * * by • 19th February 2008

“Teapigs green tea is the best green tea I have ever had. Quite unlike other ones which are are bland, bitter and boring. Whenever I've bought green tea, its just stayed in the cupboard gathering dust. The Teapigs green/black tea is something else. It's subtle yet packed with flavour whilst not being overpowering.
I've taken my Teapigs tea to the office for tea tastings now, going to take it to my Dad's for a tea tasting experience....
Thank you Teapigs for doing something with tea which is akin to reinventing the wheel. It is absolutely delicious, the tea temples are extraordinary and I just love watching the tea leaves unfurl in the temple ...”

* * * * * by • 14th February 2008

“This green tea is fabulous [and I've tried many] as it's so smooth and not at all bitter. If you don't like Green Tea then this is the one to try because I guarantee you won't be disappointed. There is no aftertaste and neither does it stain your teeth [like many of the supermarket green teas] So you see, it's very good for your health and your teeth! What more could you possibly want from a Green Tea!

Magic stuff!

* * * * * by • 9th July 2007

Perhaps I've been spoilt

* * - - - by • 8th June 2007

“Having tried this at the end of the teapigs trial (my friend Paul and I couldn't decide which tea to choose so bought a sample of everything and tried the lot - highly recommended!!) This tea was a nice enough green tea but just wasn't that special - like I said - perhaps we've been spoilt...”

Mao Feng - wonderful verdant gorgeousness

* * * * * by • 13th January 2007

“This stuff is flippin' lovely. I thought it would be just like all the other green teas I've tried, but it really is different - subtle, not at all bitter, and great even without honey. Oh yes - I normally have to have ladlefuls of the sweet stuff in my green tea, but dolloping it into this would be like putting ketchup on foie gras. Please, please, never discontinue this - if you do, I will send you nasty e-mails for the rest of my natural life.”
